Greens join sceptics to stop action on climate change

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development and Local Government
Leader of the House
Member for Grayndler

December 2 2009

Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese today expressed his disappointment that the Rudd Labor Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) legislation was voted down in the Senate for a second time by a coalition of Greens, Liberal, National and Family First Party Senators.

“The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is an effective, responsible way to reduce carbon pollution and help families and businesses make the transition to a greener economy," said Mr Albanese.

The policy is designed to limit the nation’s carbon emissions by making polluters pay for the pollution they produce and rewarding those who reduce their carbon pollution.

Thirty two countries already have national emissions trading schemes, four other major economies are moving towards emissions trading and 27 states and provinces in the US and Canada are introducing emissions trading.

With Liberal Senators Sue Boyce and Judith Troeth crossing the floor to support the Government, the votes of the five Greens senators would have been enough for the legislation to pass.

"The Greens Party had an opportunity to vote for real action on climate change," said Mr Albanese.

"Instead they chose to side with the unholy trinity of climate sceptics, Abbott, Joyce and Fielding, and block this important legislation."
