Albanese supports Camperdown Dragons centenary

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development and Local Government
Leader of the House
Member for Grayndler

March 3 2010

Anthony Albanese today returned to Camperdown Oval to help support his old club, the Camperdown Dragons Junior Rugby League Football Club, celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The club is believed to be the oldest junior club in Australia. Its most famous former player is rugby league immortal John Raper, who won eight premierships and played 39 times for Australia, a record at the time.

Mr Albanese was born and raised in Camperdown and played for the Camperdown Dragons as a schoolboy in the mid 1970s.

“Rugby league taught me that the team is more important than the individual - something that is particularly important to remember in politics also,” said Mr Albanese.

“Institutions such as the Camperdown Dragons that reach their centenary deserve the support of the local community and I hope everyone gets behind them (and South Sydney) in their quests to win premierships in 2010.”
